CHAPTER SEVEN

Robert was already standing near the lion fountain, a big grin spread across his face when I arrived.

“They’re pretty. I did a good job ordering them, if I say so myself,” Robert waved his hand at the flowers.

I knew Robert thought I was carrying them to take them home.

“Glad you like them,” I said tartly, “because I don’t want them. Take them!” I thrust the vase towards Robert.

He put his hands up, refusing to take them, and his brows furrowed in surprise. “Huh?”

I placed the vase on the stone wall that circled the fountain. “And I want to give you this, too.” I started to fish around my bag for the necklace box.

“What’s this all about, Jenna?”

“It’s simple,” I said firmly, “I’m not interested in you anymore. You cheated on me and I’m done—just done. No chance in hell that we are ever getting back together.” I held out the necklace box.

“Come on, Jenna. Give me another chance.”

“No,” I set the box down on the wall next to the roses. “Don’t call me, text me, or try to get in touch with me again…period. We are finished!”

“Jennaaaaaa,” Robert whined, “let’s kiss and make up.”

I shook my head. I knew Robert didn’t believe me when I said we were done. How could I have ever been in love with this guy? He was such an egotistical ass.

“Goodbye, Robert,” I turned to leave.

Robert lunged towards me, grabbing my arm. “We’re not done talking yet.” He twirled me around to face him.

“Oh yes we are, Robert. We are so done.”

Robert pulled me towards him, pulling my body tightly against his. He leaned down and pressed his mouth on mine, his tongue trying to part my lips.

I tried to push him away, but before I had a chance he released me abruptly.

His eyes looked past me, a mixture of fear and astonishment. “What the hell!”

“Wha…” I turned to follow his gaze. “Oh my God!” I slapped my hand over my mouth. Standing on the grass a short distance away was an animal—a sleek, golden-furred creature with an elongated torso, short tail, and a pointed muzzle. It was similar in appearance to a wolf, but I knew instantly it was Brock in his jackal. I had never seen Brock in his animal before and I marveled at how powerful and beautiful he was.

The creature started to snarl and snap.

“Fucking scavenger looking for food I bet,” Robert rumbled. “I’ll give him some food alright. I’m going to bash him upside his pointy head.” Robert picked up the vase as the animal glared at us, his eyes wild, ears erect, fur bristling, tail cocked, and fangs barred.

“Don’t throw that Robert…don’t. That’s Brock—Brock in his animal.”

“Brock?” Robert sneered. “What are you talking about?” Suddenly, realization hit, “Holy shit!” He jerked his head towards the jackal. “Is that some fucking shifter you met on that mail order bride site?”

I narrowed my eyes. “How did you know about the site?” I had never mentioned the site to Robert or anyone else for that matter.
